Beginner-friendly? sure, yeah
The good: SKYLER brings her recognizable, sonically euphoric style to Monstercat for her "Blue Dream" EP, and alone, that style is something I honestly dig pretty hard. SKYLER's 'future trap' is, in effect, a bridge between future bass and hardwave, taking melodic supersaws and big synth runs from the former and streamlining them into hardwave-esque leads and subs. It's a strong style for sure, and "Blue Dream" has the production to match, with polished mixdowns and clean sound design alongside neat sampling and/or vocal performances (mainly of Josh Rubin on "Fix Me"). I am very intrigued as to how SKYLER settles into the trap scene in the future, because this is honestly a great showing.
The bad: Despite being interesting in the wider context of the scene, "Blue Dream" is very repetitive in its own context. All of the tracks showcase the future trap style well, but they fail to try different things to one another — both from a production standpoint and an emotional standpoint, with some tracks feeling a little shallow in the latter — and ultimately this project loses my interest quite quickly.
Name | Comments | Superlative |
---|---|---|
Chrome Hearts | Melodic-driven, almost euphoric track with great synth runs, a cool stuttery section, and a nice break | Melodic |
Hit My Line | Loved the lead and the sample complements it nicely, with more hardwave-esque low-end in the production | Standout |
Fix Me | Josh Rubin's vocal is monotonous, but still evocative and mildly depressing, and SKYLER's backing production is good too | Emotive |
Haunt You | Stuttery future bass with a trap-esque beat and a mildly annoying high-pitched vocal sample; still cool though | Standout |
Fall | Clean sub-bassline with a muffled sample and some nice leads, though nothing really stands out much | Melodic |
