Only in Dreams (Remixes)

I'll be the first to admit that I don't hold "Only In Dreams" in a particularly high regard. The same can be said for these remixes - I found that a worrying number of them went into the 60/100 rating range.

  1. Exodus - Prolix Remix - Prolix absolutely killed this remix, crazy bass stabs flying everywhere for a roller of a neurofunk cut. A massive step up from the slightly directionless dubstep original. Kudos to you, Prolix. (78/100)

  2. Take Me Home - DNMO Remix - DNMO's lapping bassline and their reframing of the vocals makes this a particularly strong remix of "Take Me Home", along with a little bit of a kick to their DnB. It's quite a simple remix, but it's also very addictive. (76/100)

  3. A.I. - Teddy Killerz & Delta Heavy Remix - Does this count as a VIP? Anyhow, this remix keeps all the good elements from the original — a powerful lead, growly basslines, and hard-hitting energy — but expands upon it via a through-and-through drum n bass lens. A little more of a dancefloor, less heavy approach yields a very good remix. (75/100)

  4. Anarchy - ShockOne Remix - The rocktronic vocal (and, by extension, the verse) is as good as the original, but the drop just has that dynamic edge which makes it heavier, almost funky, and certainly a lot more interesting. Strong remix that adds the missing piece of a puzzle to an original track that was lost without it. (72/100)

  5. Exodus - Junk Mail Remix - Junk Mail takes a similar route to Prolix, turning the brostep original into full-blown neurofunk, and whilst the lead is a little less convincing than Prolix's, this is still a pretty strong remix. (70/100)

  6. Here With Me - Clockvice Remix - The liquidy drums are so clean, and Clockvice orchestrates some amazing sound design all throughout (always following that liquidy motif). I really wanted to like this one based off of purely that, but the drops do get far too messy at times and thus lose their direction and impact. (69/100)

  7. Show Me The Light - GANZ Remix - Solid remix, the slower vocal delivery works well for the atmosphere and the constant synth run threaded through the whole thing does its job too. (69/100)

  8. Revenge - Conrank Remix - Conrank slows it down so every bass hit and every synth is painstakingly enunciated, before plunging into a sideways dubstep drop with flying basslines and powerful basslines. This is technically a good remix, but the modulated dubstep style doesn't quite align with my preference - purely a taste thing though. (69/100)

  9. Collide - Bensley Remix - Bensley's added production is really good, he sticks in this rich, rolling bass lead that interacts well with his complementary synthwork, but even with a big drumstep drop slapped in at the end, the track still just doesn't gain that interesting quality it needed, especially with the mix feeling a little flat. (68/100)

  10. Show Me The Light - Rival Remix - Rival's orchestral signature shines through here, and it interplays quite well with the vocal, and his crushing basses in the builds are only an asset. But the drops can feel quite janky at times. (67/100)

  11. Lift You Up - Murdock Remix - Kind of a goofy lead introduced into the first section, but this remix actually ends up being pretty creative with the juddering lead being of particular note. A little long, though, and a little repetitive, but intriguing. (66/100)

  12. A.I. - WHZLY ReWired - A cyberpunk-esque midtempo take on "A.I." was not something I was expecting, but I guess it fits pretty well with the name, and the smooth bassline that motors through the entire thing complements the various synth progressions as well. Would be a golden remix if it was more interesting. (65/100)

  13. Take Me Home - Dirt Monkey Remix - Dirt Monkey's wobbly dubstep style works surprisingly well with the vibe of the original, but something still feels missing — I suspect he just didn't have a whole lot to work with. (64/100)

  14. Revenge - LAXX Remix - The predrop is absolutely sick, gives the original a lot more grandeur with powerful bass hits and some insane warped guitar lead thrown into the mix, but unfortunately the abrasive dubstep drops are not for me. (63/100)

  15. Exodus -  Hi I'm Ghost Remix - Hi I'm Ghost posits an intro cinematic enough to rival the original, and although the briddim drop is far too abrasive, it still somehow has more direction than the original. Thankfully it isn't as loud as it could have easily been, but the sound design and the sustains are unfortunately not it. (63/100)

  16. Replicant - Magnetude Remix - Figured I could count on Magnetude for a strong neurofunk remix, but I didn't really count on it being "Replicant". Honestly, although the resulting DnB is pretty meaty, Magnetude's style clashes a little too much with the original to make this an enjoyable remix. (62/100)

  17. Revenge - Reaper Remix - REAPER is a little aggressive with the lead here, overrides the atmosphere just a little bit too much. I think that's the main problem with most of these "Revenge" remixes — they tend to lose the atmospheric sensibility. (61/100)

  18. Show Me The Light - Annix Remix - Annix brings some very interesting sound design and a pretty weird lead that doesn't work with the original at all. There are two clashing moods here, both very distinct from one another and both with independent potential, but combining them was a recipe for failure. (60/100)

  19. Revenge - Kanine Remix - The buildup feels a little bit corny, and, to be honest, so does the drop, hoisting a weird lead that feels a little screechy and a little random. It feels like the atmosphere of the original has retroactively been taken back and replaced with what feels like a little bit of a dated drum n bass cut. (58/100)

  20. Here With Me - The Prototypes Remix - Not a bad dancefloor drum n bass remix, although I do prefer the future bass ideas in the original. This is well-produced but unfortunately not too interesting. (57/100)

  21. Take Me Home - Protostar Remix - Another simple dancefloor drum n bass remix, and for these it just comes down to how interesting the original was. Which was not very interesting. (54/100)

  22. Show Me The Light - VIP - A little bit more of a dancefloor twinge added to quite a soft original track, the vocal is still alright and the production doesn't really get a whole lot more interesting. (53/100)

  23. Take Me Home - Acoustic Mix - An acoustic mix only really works if the original material is interesting enough. (48/100)

  24. Replicant - Hydraulix Remix - Quirky trap remix of a trap song — the original was really very good because it had a fantastic atmosphere and strong ideas (namely the stabby lead). But no, this remix removes it all and replaces it with a null and void, empty trap drop, surrounded by nonsensical bassline hits and equally nonsensical sound design — what the hell is this? (28/100)
